Yesterday we were introduced to a new political party called the Bermuda Democratic Alliance. I like the idea of a new party and I hope they are successful in getting their people and platform together so that Bermudians have a third option when it comes to the next election. However, I have a problem with the use of BDA as the acronym. For one reason; it doesn't belong to them. It belongs to the people of Bermuda. Many years ago I tossed the idea around in my head about creating a new political party. As have many others over time. I thought about what kind of name would be good to have and the idea of using BDA had it's appeal. It was catchy and clever in a cute way. My idea was Bermuda Democratic Association. I never clued into the word Alliance. The first time I saw Alliance was when Graeme Outerbridge threw it out on Limey's website and I have to admit I was a little annoyed that I hadn't thought of it. But by then I had already decided BDA shouldn't be the name of a political party no matter how cute or clever it was. Why? Because I think it's actually very divisive. If you are a Bermudian who is proud of your country and wants everyone to know that you are from Bermuda you will put a BDA sticker on your car, bike, luggage etc. But if you are a supporter of one of the other parties be it the PLP or the UBP now having a BDA sticker on your car or bike might send the message you support the Bermuda Democratic Alliance. And that shouldn't be the case. BDA stands for Bermuda and Bermuda belongs to each and every Bermudian. Not just one political party. In the spirit of inclusiveness and not creating a sense of confusion I would sincerely ask the Bermuda Democratic Alliance Party to change their name and give BDA back to it's rightful owners. The people of Bermuda. I would recommend renaming the party The Alliance for a Democratic Bermuda or ADB instead. You already have established www.thealliance.bm as your website so it would certainly be more fitting and it would certainly go a long way in making sure everyone knew they came first before cute and clever.

DAB - The Democratic Alliance for/of Bermuda may be better. ADB is a bit of a mouthful compared to DAB, although DAB has its own problems too...

Just HAD to get the Apple Desktop Bus in there, didn't you? Actually, all joking aside, what you've said makes sense. DAB - The Democratic Alliance for/of Bermuda may be better. A little DAB'll do ya? Already used for the development applications board. A little DAB'll do ya!

Mmmm, good point with the development applications board. They could just cut of the Bermuda part. The South African Democratic Alliance just uses 'DA'.

ADB was actually quite an innovation in its day. Talk to HB about it.

BAD's taken already by Bermudians Against the Draft.
Howabout National Alliance for Democracy? NAD? Or is it too close to 'nada'? Or is there something in there about testicular fortitude?
ABACADABRA - All Bermudian Alliance Coalition Assisting Democratic Awakening of Bermuda's Real Assets? Or too much hocus pocus? But think of the campaign potentials! And bunny friendly!
New Democratic Alliance - NDA? Oh, I know, Alliance for New Democracy, AND. It'll be great for the newspapers, 'General Election Contest - PLP AND UBP Fight It Out...'
