Question is, is the Corporation likely to give up the revenue from Bulls head by offering Saturday free parking?
If I'm not mistaken, parking at Bulls Head on weekends is already free. But maybe somebody else can confirm this?

Is it?? Oh well if that's the case, scratch what I just said. I've never parked there on a weekend, in fact I've only parked there period like 3 or 4 times....

That's correct.

For my two sense... I fully agree with making more use of Bull's Head with free shuttles to the Front Street area. I also agree Reid Street should be closed off to pedestrians-only on Saturdays and the street should get a complete makeover. If making it pedestrian-only works out well then make it permanent. I'd also like to see the office buildings in town open up their garage parking to the public on week-ends to help ease the congestion and support the retailers.

BTW - for all the griping about a lack of selection on island just remember one thing. The more junk you buy off island the harder you make it for the local retailers and the harder you make it for them to carry a diverse selection. It's a Catch-22. Buy ALL your basics in Bermuda and quit your bitching will ya! You live on an island in the middle of nowhere. Of course everything away is cheap compared to Bermuda.

Besides you know as well as I do that when you go away you end up buying a bunch of crap you never use just cos it was cheap. Yes

Oh and as to the attitude in the stores.... to keep your sanity just have some fun with it. "Excuse me, but where can I find the Grey Poupon?" Rasta

At this point the Corporation of Hamilton does run a free shuttle service between Bull's Head and City Hall Car Park although I believe that only runs on weekdays.

http://www.royalgazette.com/rg/Article/article.jsp?sectionId=60&articleId=7d99e2f30030009

Interesting that the Corporation also recommends that people that have to work late move their cars out of Bull's Head after 6:00 and/or call Safeguard so that a security guard can accompany them when they collect their car in the evening.

Quote
Starting today, the Corporation of Hamilton will be offering a free shuttle service between the City Hall Car Park and the Bull's Head Car Park.

The shuttle bus, announced yesterday, will travel between the two parking lots every 15 minutes between 4.30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to allow the public to get back to their vehicles safely after dark.

Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling said that the service is a response to complaints from people fearing for their safety.

"We know a number of people, particularly women, have expressed concern and are nervous about going to their vehicle in the evening, especially as it is starting to get dark earlier," he said.

"We urge people who may be working late to use this service to move their car from Bull's Head after 6 p.m. and park on the street. This will allow them to park closer to their office when parking is free."

The service is scheduled to continue until the start of Daylight Savings Time next March.

Meanwhile, anyone who would like assistance getting to their car after 7 p.m. are asked to call Safeguard Security at 292-2626 so that a guard can be sent to meet them at the entrance of the parking lot and escort them to their vehicle.

it does appear that there is a catch 22 -- surely shuttle busses, improvements, 'sharing' shopping areas more with people, etc. will benefit retail-- and subsequently selection and variety.

Well I just did the BUY BERMUDA thing...  I went to M & M's, and bought a flat screen TV.  Terrific selection and fabulous prices...  in fact they've just lowered the prices for Xmas.  You can get a 50" Samsung for $1425.  I didn't need anything that big for the bedroom, price wasn't the issue cuz my budget was $1500, but I bought a Samsung 42" for $1175.  Those byes know how to run a business.

Yea M & M!!!   Thumbs Up   Yes    Love

WF to you Buddha Bunny I should say....

BTW - when it comes to purchasing large screen digital TV's it's actually not a bad idea to buy locally. Often times a screen will get damaged on it's way to the island and you run the risk of having to deal with that before you've even opened the box.

went to M&M's myself today - nearly bought the $1175 TV a couple of days ago-- ended up paying a little more $1250 for a 37" LCD dropped from 1375 !  i agree - terrific selection.

I agree that buying TVs on-island makes sense and you can get good bang for your buck. Two years ago bought the future missus a TV from M&Ms myself - and this year she turned the tables and bought me (an even bigger) one from there.

Yeah I'd say you can't beat M & M locally, you're not saving anything time you pay shipping and customs duty. And if it comes in broken, you're SOL. No-one here will fix it, or you'll be charged to fix it, and overseas warranty is voided. Not worth the hassle..

For all you guys buying  HDtvs, what are you hooking up to them? Bluray? HD cable? Satellite?

Blu-ray
HD cable
Apple TV
Content downloaded form the Internet (i.e programming available in 720p, 1080i or 1080p)

If anyone has any experience with HD satellite I'd be interested in learning more.

Strangely enough, I actually managed to Buy Bermuda and not feel ripped off this holiday season.  Looked online at the price of the New Super Mario Bros Wii game.  It was only $20 more here than it was online so I figured by the time I paid shipping, duty and Zip-X fees (couldn't find a site that would ship the games direct to Bermuda for a sum that wasn't astronomical), I'd be paying the same amount.  Plus, I have the games in-hand and don't have to worry they won't get here in time for Christmas.

However, if I had found the markups on the stuff I wanted to give as Christmas gifts as insane as the stuff CO found, I'd be shopping online for sure!  A friend of mine that has two kids and can't get off the rock to shop was lamenting the selection of toys and the ridiculous prices.  With the closure of Jack n Jills, the toy selection is even worse than ever.

You can find huge price differences between stores here too.  My mother bought some LED lights for her Christmas tree from Masters.  She says the same lights were $10 more at Gorhams.
