The Rules

Moderators will act according to the rules in all actions regarding the warning/banning of members.  A moderator will act according to his/her interpretation at the time.  The moderator will issue ONE warning to a member, if that warning is not heeded, the moderator will ban that member according to the published schedule of penalties (1st offense = 1 day, 2nd offense = 2 days etc).  If a member feels they have been unfairly warned/banned, they may appeal that decision to the moderators in total.  The moderators will review the posts in question and decide.  All appeal decisions are final.  If the moderators find that the original decision was appropriate, the decision stands, but if the moderators on review, believe that their fellow moderator perhaps acted inappropriately, a vote to reinstate the member (or un-warn if there is such a word) will take place, again simple majority rules, and the original warning/banning could be reversed.  This is intended to provide an avenue of appeal against totalitarian authority.

In all cases of warnings and banning, the member will be advised which rule they have violated.  In the case of banning, all banning will be automatically timed by the system.  

No outing of any member at any time.  This will get you permanently banned, no warning, but you may still appeal to the Moderator Group.  Outing includes, but is not limited to, outright naming of individuals or members of their family, or providing information that the average person could follow to deduce from that a member’s name.

No racist remarks or pictures intended to convey a racist message.  These will include, but are not limited to, photographs of lynchings, KKK members or meetings, Aryan Nation, Nazi Party, etc.  A picture of such above may have historical
relevance to a particular thread, and its posting may well advance the cause of a particular topic, in which case prior approval must be sought from a moderator before posting.  Under no circumstances will hate speech be tolerated.

Human interaction being what it is; flare-ups will inevitably occur.  Every attempt should be made to keep personal attacks and name calling in member to member exchange, to a minimum.  Certainly, Rabbit Island would be the place for that outburst, but even there, a personal attack, if too vitriolic, could be dealt with by a moderator.

No pornographic material is to be posted.  Nudity per se is not to be construed as pornographic. But remember this is a public site, and may be view by children under the age of majority.  If your posting is questionable, better to not post.

Profanity may get caught by the forum software, but judicious use is advised.  If you feel that the use of profanity advances your post then by all means substitute symbols for some of the letters.  Misspelling of profane words is also acceptable.  However excessive use of profanity or profanity for profanity’s sake is not considered necessary and will almost certainly get the poster a warning along with an edit of the post.  Use of profanity with respect to non-public figures or non-members will be shown far less leniency.

Any post containing potentially libelous statements will be immediately removed by a moderator who shall copy such post before its deletion to all moderators for later discussion.  The determination of whether a statement is libelous is at the sole discretion of any and all of the moderators.  The first instance will result in a warning with escalating disciplinary action or outright banning for further infractions.  An appeal to the moderator group can be made by any poster who believes the statement(s) to be non-libelous and will be discussed and ruled on by all moderators on a majority rule basis.  Much less leniency will be demonstrated if the libelous or potentially libelous statement is made about a non-public figure.

When posting information about others not present to defend themselves, it is important to not present the information as fact, unless you know that to be the case, in which case you need to present evidence to back up that assertion.  If the report is not known to be fact, then qualifying words such as alleged, in my opinion, to the best of my knowledge, as far as I know or I believe should precede the statement.  Statements about someone’s behaviour can be made, but it is difficult, for example, to determine whether the person is in fact ‘drunk’ or acting in a ‘drunken manner’.  Better to err on the side of caution.  Rather than say someone is a jerk, better to say they are acting ‘like a jerk’.  When referencing another person’s stated opinion its always best to provide a link to the source (if possible) or at least attribute your source in your post (should you require assistance with this a moderator will be pleased to help).

We strongly discourage the use of multiple accounts.  Also included is having multiple people accessing a single account.  Administrators can track your IP addresses and determine whether you are using more than one account, or multiple people are using a single account.    We expect members to develop an on-line persona and would strongly discourage split personalities.  Use of multiple accounts will result in a warning and/or deletion of the most recently created account in the case of multiple accounts.  If an account is being used by multiple people, the account will be deactivated, but a record of the various IP addresses will be maintained. Once you have an account its yours for all the time you choose to post here.  

Spam or advertising accounts will be deleted without warning.  Please seek approval of a moderator before placing a "plug" for a particular enterprises into a post.  Minimal plugs will be supported on a one time basis.; advertising campaigns will not.  The above restriction does not apply to charitable events or activities, only to ”plugs” where the poster or their affiliates expect to profit monetarily from the advertised enterprise.

It should be noted that this is a discussion forum, and by registering an account here, it is expected that you will be participating in the discussions in the various threads.  Unlike other forums, BIAW discourages lurkers as members, because it gives an incorrect view of the stats.  Other forums claim hundreds of members, but in actuality, only a half-dozen or so are active.  If a new member does not actively post, then in all likelihood the account will be suspended, as per the Registration Agreement you acknowledged when you signed up.
