Breaking story from today's Royal gazette:

Breaking News: Businessmen to fight for BDA leadership

By Tim Smith

The Bermuda Democratic Alliance will pick its leader from two candidates who don’t sit in the House of Assembly — Craig Cannonier and Myron Piper.

BDA announced today that the two businessmen will go head to head for the top job at the Alliance’s first party conference on Saturday.

Katherine Michelmore will be Deputy Leader by way of acclamation, according to a statement released this afternoon.

Founding member Michael Fahy, the former United Bermuda Party chairman, will stand against Granville Gibbons for the chairmanship.

"The leadership contenders for the BDA are unqualified because they studied at lesser establishments than His Excellency, The Rt Hon Emperor Dr  Dodgy Doc and their degrees are not in double major rocket science and economics with a side order of neurosurgery.  Dodgy Doc is a genius of such staggering strong black man proportions that even his assistant has to be a lawyer. He knows Tiger and Barack you know. The BDA are haters, confused negroes and whites who shouldn't be trusted." - Laverne.

Completely made up, just thought I'd save her the effort.

Kathy Michelmore is a great lady. She's a doctor, currently a GP.

Craig Cannonier, a cousin of a few of us on this board, is a successful businessman.

I know Mike Fahy is a lawyer, seems OK.

Don't know the other guys.

Myron Piper is an "education activist" as per the RG. Hope he has shaved since their photo of him, people don't vote for people with beards or stubble anymore.

For the most part that is true, but I think less so here. At least in the past. Have you seen Stuart?

The whole beard fashion thing goes in cycles.  Personally, I don't understand the prejudice against beards, its totally ridiculous.

As to the BDA leadership thing.  Not really impressed with either candidate.  Don't know much about Mr. Cannonier, but what I do know of him doesn't encourage me.  I do know Mr. Piper, and while I can see him as the likely leader, I've never been impressed by him.  Too slick.  Very much an opportunist in my estimation, although one cloaked in good intentions.  Could be wrong though, but those were my impressions.

My feeling is that, despite their protestations in todays RG, all the BDA MPs didn't want the leadership because they didn't want to open the BDA up to attacks like 'the Crockwell Party', i.e. pointing out the connection with the UBP (still don't know what the difference is though between them).  I've got no problem with them having a leader outside of parliament, but it is tricky.  I'm more disappointed they didn't try a truly radical thing such as having no one leader but perhaps two spokespersons instead, one male, one female.  Also surprised that they are thinking of appointing a party whip; I thought they were trying to move away from such things?

My main thing with the BDA these days really is their assertion of having big name PLPers on their side, but since saying that they haven't produced them.  Which makes me think they were just bluffing and hoping that the bluff would become a self-fulfilling prophecy or something.  Which it patently hasn't.  I guess the 'we had to deceive you' thing is catching.

Contrary to the PLP leader, at least Myron has a cloak.

I think they thought they had someone.  But it seems that leaving the PLP is harder than one would assume.
